Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese method of healing that is more than 3,000 years old. It is based on the belief that energy, called Qi (or chi), flows freely through our bodies along pathways called meridians. When the energy of the body is flowing harmoniously, the body is in balance and in a state of health. Conversely, when the body’s energy is not flowing properly, the body is out of balance and in a state of dis-ease or pain. Stress, trauma, poor diet, and/or lack of sleep can interrupt the normal flow of energy, and we begin to feel ill, feel pain, sleep poorly, eat too much or too little, and feel sluggish.

Traditional Chinese medicine honors the body’s innate ability to heal. Acupuncturists treat the whole person, not just one illness, condition, or diagnosis. The acupuncturist creates a “point prescription” that determines the proper placement of needles. This stimulates the body’s ability to heal itself by restoring the ideal flow of energy.

Whether you have an acute issue that has just come on, a chronic condition lasting many years, or are simply looking to keep your body in an optimized state of health, acupuncture can help relieve your symptoms and restore your energy.

Congratulations on taking that first step towards balanced health!

Homeopathy is a treatment founded by a German medical physician, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, in 1796. The method is grounded in the ‘Law of Similars’: a principle of like cures like, based on the idea that the substance that produces symptoms in a healthy person will be the same substance used to cure symptoms in a sick person. Practitioners have been offering this form of healing since the late 1800s.

The word ‘natural’ has been tossed around and improperly used over the course of the 21st century, but in its rightful and true sense, ‘natural’ applies to homeopathic remedies. All homeopathic remedies are made from substances found in nature: plants, animals, and minerals. There are no additives or preservatives in homeopathic remedies.

Because a homeopathic remedy is an energetic medicine, it acts on the body’s energy to stimulate the body to heal. A homeopathic prescription is based on the uniqueness of each individual. A practitioner uses this individual distinctiveness to match each remedy to a specific person. Of particular significance, homeopathy does not treat the disease itself, but rather it treats the individual with the disease.

Homeopathic remedies are helpful in treating physical complaints, as well as mental and emotional issues, both chronic and acute. Homeopathy is an extremely safe and effective treatment and can be used in conjunction with any traditional medicine.

Any individual undergoing homeopathic treatment should stay on prescribed medications until a consult with his or her medical physician suggests that prescription and/or over the counter medications can be reduced in strength or stopped altogether.

AcupunctureOfHingham_Cupping.png

Cupping began in China centuries ago to warm the body, promote circulation of chi and blood, and to help reduce pain. The original technique was with “fire cups” in which the practitioner would light material (like a piece of wood) on fire, and then quickly insert into the cup to both expel the oxygen and create suction before immediately applying to the skin. Today, the practitioner uses a hand pump to evacuate oxygen rather than a flame. In this way, the acupuncturist can better control the amount of pressure being applied to the affected area. This therapy leaves colorful, circular bruises on the skin which can last from a few days to a week.

An alternative method to reduce this look is to use moving cups. Here, the practitioner first applies massage oil and then uses the vacuum pump to slide or move the cups over the area of the body needed. Skin discoloration goes away more quickly with moving cups. Some patients say this is a very relaxing, massage-like treatment.

Cupping can be used alone or in combination with an acupuncture treatment.
